Welcome to Holland
Welcome to Holland is a brief essay written by Emily Perl Kingsley about her experience of raising her son with Down Syndrome
After the psychologist told me that my son is to be diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, I walked out of her consulting room, sat in my car and cried. I cried. Then I cried some more. It took me years to work through my sorrow and to this day, I still experience insurmountable sorrow. As the years have passed, I have realised that my son is ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ and I wouldn’t be without him EVER. He has made me a better person; a better parent. He is has brought to the lives of my husband and I an incredible joy – our Holland and to be honest, we think it is better than Italy!
So when I stumbled on these two You Tubes, I felt inspired, moved but most of all comforted. I hope you do too!
